Welcome
So You Are Thinking About Trying Cannabis
Whether you are curious, looking for relaxation, or exploring for the first time after legalization — this guide is for you. Cannabis can be a great experience when you approach it with a little knowledge and the right mindset.
The most important thing to know is that there is no rush. You do not need to buy the strongest product or try everything at once. The best first experience is a gentle one, where you stay in control and learn what you enjoy.
This guide walks through consumption methods, dosing basics, what to expect, and what to do if things feel uncomfortable. Read it all or skip to the section that interests you most.
Step 1
Choose Your Method
How you consume cannabis affects how quickly you feel it, how strong it hits, and how long it lasts. Here are the five main options.
Smoking
Inhaling combusted cannabis flower through a joint, pipe, or bong.
Advantages
- Fast onset (1 to 5 minutes)
- Easy to control dose by taking small hits
- Wide variety of strains available as flower
Disadvantages
- Produces smoke and odor
- Can irritate lungs and throat
- Requires accessories (lighter, rolling papers, pipe)
Vaping
Heating cannabis flower or oil to produce vapor without combustion.
Advantages
- Fast onset similar to smoking
- Less harsh on lungs than smoke
- More discreet with less odor
- Precise temperature control
Disadvantages
- Requires a vaporizer device
- Cartridges can be expensive
- Battery maintenance needed
Edibles
Cannabis-infused food and beverages like gummies, chocolates, and drinks.
Advantages
- No smoking or inhalation required
- Long-lasting effects (4 to 8 hours)
- Precise dosing with labeled products
- Very discreet
Disadvantages
- Slow onset (30 min to 2 hours)
- Easy to overconsume while waiting
- Effects are stronger and harder to control
- Duration can be too long for some
Tinctures
Cannabis extract in liquid form, taken under the tongue or added to food.
Advantages
- Fast sublingual onset (15 to 45 minutes)
- Very precise dosing with dropper
- No smoke, no odor
- Easy to adjust dose incrementally
Disadvantages
- Taste can be unpleasant for some
- Slightly slower onset than inhalation
- Must hold under tongue for full effect
Topicals
Cannabis-infused creams, balms, and lotions applied to the skin.
Advantages
- No psychoactive effects in most products
- Targeted application to specific areas
- Completely non-intoxicating
- No special tools or skills needed
Disadvantages
- Does not produce a high
- Effects limited to application area
- May need frequent reapplication
Our recommendation for first-timers
Vaping with a low-THC cartridge gives you the best combination of fast onset, easy dose control, and a forgiving experience. You can take one small puff, wait 10 minutes, and decide if you want more. This real-time feedback loop is much easier to manage than edibles, where you have to wait up to 2 hours to know how you feel.
If you prefer not to inhale anything, start with a 2.5 mg edible and wait the full 2 hours. Do not take a second dose during that window.

Step 2
Start Low, Go Slow
This is the single most important piece of advice for new cannabis users. Take a small amount, wait, and see how you feel before taking more.
For inhalation (smoking or vaping): Take one small puff. Wait 10 to 15 minutes. If you want stronger effects, take one more puff. Repeat.
For edibles: Start with 2.5 mg or less. Wait a minimum of 2 full hours. If you feel nothing after 2 hours, you can consider taking another 2.5 mg. Do not double up.

Step 3
What to Expect
Cannabis affects everyone differently, but these are the most common sensations reported by first-time users. Not everyone will experience all of these.
- 01A feeling of relaxation and calm throughout your body
- 02Mild euphoria or an elevated mood
- 03Heightened sensory awareness, especially with music and food
- 04Altered perception of time, usually feeling like it slows down
- 05Dry mouth, commonly called cottonmouth
- 06Increased appetite, known as the munchies
- 07Drowsiness, especially with indica-dominant strains
- 08Occasional mild anxiety or racing thoughts, usually at higher doses
Step 4
Setting Matters More Than You Think
Your environment has a significant impact on your cannabis experience. The same dose in a comfortable, familiar setting can feel completely different from the same dose at a crowded party.
For your first time, choose a setting where you feel safe and relaxed. Your home, a trusted friend’s place, or a quiet outdoor spot. Have water, snacks, and entertainment ready. Good music, a familiar show, or a low-key activity can enhance the experience.
Having a trusted friend present — especially one with cannabis experience — can make a big difference. They can reassure you if you feel anxious and help you navigate the experience. Clear your schedule so you do not have obligations or deadlines to worry about.
First-Time Checklist
- Clear schedule with no driving needed
- Comfortable, familiar environment
- Water and non-alcoholic beverages
- Snacks you enjoy
- Music, movies, or relaxing activities
- A trusted friend, ideally experienced
- Low-dose product (vape pen or 2.5 mg edible)
- A positive, curious mindset
Step 5
What If You Feel Uncomfortable
It happens. Even experienced users occasionally overdo it. Here are five steps to get through it. The most important thing: it will pass.
Breathe slowly and deliberately
Deep, slow breaths. In through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 4, out through your mouth for 6. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and reduces anxiety.
Ground yourself with your senses
Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste. This is a proven grounding technique that pulls you out of anxious spirals.
Drink water and chew black pepper
Stay hydrated. If anxiety is the issue, chewing 2 or 3 whole black peppercorns is a widely reported remedy. The caryophyllene in pepper may help modulate THC effects.
Change your environment
Move to a different room. Step outside for fresh air. A change of scenery can shift your mental state. If music or a show is overstimulating, turn it off.
Lie down and wait it out
Find a comfortable spot and let time do its work. Inhaled cannabis peaks in 15 to 30 minutes and diminishes within 1 to 2 hours. Edibles take longer but will also pass.

Reality Check
Myths Debunked
Cannabis has decades of misinformation to unpack. Here are some of the most persistent myths and what the evidence actually says.
Myth
Cannabis is a gateway drug
Reality
Research does not support the gateway theory. Most cannabis users do not progress to harder substances. Correlation is not causation.
Myth
You can fatally overdose on cannabis
Reality
No confirmed fatal overdose from cannabis alone has been documented. You can have an uncomfortable experience from too much, but it is not lethal.
Myth
Cannabis kills brain cells
Reality
Studies on adult cannabis users show no evidence of permanent brain cell damage. However, frequent use during adolescence may affect developing brains, which is one reason the legal age is 21.
Myth
All cannabis gets you extremely high
Reality
THC levels vary enormously. Low-dose products, CBD-dominant strains, and microdosing provide subtle effects. You have control over intensity.
Myth
Indica always makes you sleepy, sativa always gives energy
Reality
These are generalizations, not rules. Terpene profiles and individual chemistry matter more than the indica/sativa label. Read our strain guide for the full story.
